RIP Uns Uwe - Five Things Issue #610
By Nico Lumma • Issue #610 • View online
On Thursday Uwe Seeler died. He was a true legend, a humble man from Hamburg, one of the best strikers of his generation, who spent 19 years with his club, Hamburger SV. He refused a suitcase full of 1,2 mio DM in cash and didn’t go to Italy in the 60s, but instead stayed with HSV. In Hamburg, Uwe Seeler was known as “Uns Uwe”, our Uwe. He was an idol for generations, always had time for his fans, especially the young ones. He never won a really big title, but he was a true giant. To get an idea of what he meant for Germany: Tagesschau, the biggest news show on European TV, started with a few minutes on Uwe Seeler on Thursday and Chancellor Olaf Scholz penned an orbiturary.
My favorite quote from Uwe Seeler: “I decide the big things and my wife decides the small ones. My wife decides which things are big and which are small.” They were married for over 60 years, so the strategy worked out well…
RIP Uns Uwe.
